I've put 3 coats of Minwax Wipe-on water based high gloss poly over a bowl with multiple woods. I don't love the look. Can I sand it down and use a spray can of Zar or Deft over it, or do I need to remove the poly completely somehow first ?

First, I don't know.

Do turners use de-waxed shellac between unlike finishes (water based to oil based)?

What is it you don't like?

I don't know what you mean by Zar and Deft. Both are companies that make a lot of different products.

My concern is that the chemicals in a finish may not be compatable with the chemicals in the waterborne finish. You could try it. At worst, you would have to strip off both finishes and start over.

Thanks Howard,
I was leaning that way, and did exactly that. Sanded really well and sprayed a deft lacquer over it. Worked like a charm.
