Looking to order a good drill type chuck and revolving tail center for my lathe (jet 1014). Any recommendations?

I have the chuck from Woodcraft (what ever brand that is) and have been quite happy with it. You can't go wrong with the Oneway tail center. Powermatic (and others) have knock offs of it for less money. The Nova tailstock set is nice too, but I prefer the Oneway if I can only have one.

I bought this and it has worked out fine on my Delta Midi. Can't go wrong on the price.

Another vote for HF...my HF runs more true than my buddy's $50 drill chuck.

I have the oneway livecenter and wouldn't trade it. Just got another one for the midi lathe. Here is the jacobs chuck I got from Craft Supply. It is nice heavy duty and works great especially with forstner bits. It is the middle one.

Grizzly make a great drill chuck - i have two of the 5/8" CNC machined ones - one for my standing drill press, the other for my lathe. Here's a link to the ones I bought:

I just bought this (http://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=3153&category=) chuck as I found my old one had internal wear and was unreliable. It's smooth and massive, and works very well. I use it very often and it's been great so far. Put it on one of these: http://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=1883&category= not a "short" MT2 arbor, the shorts won't eject (DAMHIKT).

I also got this live center (http://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=1592&category=) which is a very nice cone live center for the price. I wouldn't' want it as my only center (I still use the stock Jet one a lot too), it's very nice for when I want a point in a hole. Impressive quality for the price.
If I had the cash, I'd be buying a oneway or similar live center system so I could turn my own wooden tips.

I recently bought the larger PSI drill chuck, because I wanted the option of using a drawbar with it. A lot of them I looked at did not have a treaded hole in the end of the morse taper. I also have one from Woodcraft (no drawbar option) and have been happy with both.

He is a center kit that is on sale at Woodcraft. Any opinions on it? I'm thinking of getting one myself.

i would add that whatever chuck you get, make sure it is well made - don't get one like the first one i had, purchased on the 'bay; it could not withstand the forces my lathe generated when turning my homemade 3 buffs on a spindle, and got destroyed, all bent out of shape. the ones i bought from grizzly - bulletproof, i think (so far, anyways). mike

I've become a keyless chuck hater. At first, I thought it was my lack of experience but I posted a thread on the flat side and got a number of responses from similar minded woodworkers.

Keyless chucks slip and loosen. Always at the wrong time. Put a key in a chuck and you've got a forever tight fit.

My keyless drills slip and my keyless lathe chuck slips. I think I'll go get that HF chuck.

Just my economically depressed 2 pennies,
Burt

You would be better served with the Nova for $68, the tips fit tight and more versatile. The tips on the set you quoted has loose fiiting; they rely on the magnets to hold them. When the tip doesn't hold tight and run true, the live center is not accurate.

I agree with Gordon on this one. The Nova is a real nice buy.

Good Luck

Does the Nova have lifetime bearings like the Oneway? I couldnt tell from the description on the web site. I saw the Oneway center is on sale over at Hartville tools for $100. But it only comes with three different tips versa everyone elses centers having 5 or 6 tips.

As for a drill chuck I was looking for one that came with a draw bar and am probably going to go with the chuck from PSI for $30.

+1 for the HF

I have to give a thumbs down to the HF MT2 drill chuck. The one I got does not run true at all. Tried it in multiple lathes and had the same poor results.

I think I am going to order the Nova live center set. Why? Simply because it has a MT2 so you can make special tips and place inside it. The Oneway only has a screw on tip. Now might eventually get a Oneway or I may evern order the PM clone of the Oneway as it is half the price. I am also going to order the PSI drill chuck with draw bar.

My "Golden Goose" (not making that up) drill chuck from Woodcraft has only .001" run out, compared to .004" in a genuine Jacob's chuck, which cost at least 4 times as much. Go with the goose.
