This is cool and scary all at the same time.

What do you guys think...a chunk of balsa wood?

Cool but all it'd take is one brain fart to ruin your day...

I've seen guys that do this at the shows in years past. Didn't see any last weekend, though - but then, I wasn't lookin' for 'em either :D

Most of the guys I've seen doing this use a 2x4 about 8-10" long and just go to town. That Carter stabilizer is touted to be the key. A 1/8" or 3/16" blade and the stabilizer is all they use and boy do they go to town on it.

Mike, who's now with Craft Supplies used to do these as demos for PS Wood a few years back. He'd just grab a 2x4 and go at it by eye. I guess after doing 50-100 of 'em per show, ya get lotsa muscle memory :P

Kinda speedy, tho, isn't he? I can't move quite that fast without coming away with a few spare parts on the table. LOL :P

The bottom line was an invite to see more on the "woodworkinginaction.com" site. A site with which I was unfamiliar. Checked it out, and there seemed to be some good instructional sessions by good people. You can buy their DVD's or watch on-line I guess. Anybody with experience about this site? I like the idea of watching the entire process. More costly than my yearly Woodsmith magazine though. Those programs where I watch the entire process have more sticking power in my mind than the Magazines alone. Guess I'm a little more of a visual learner.

That's funny, I was at the Milwaukee show early this year and saw almost the exact same demo done by a guy selling carter supplies. In fact if you go to Carters web site, there is a video of the same guy I saw doing the demo. It was pretty impressive and my uncle bought one of the cart guides for small blades on the spot. I don't know what blades, ect he had setup on the jet he was using for the demo, but he had my uncle back there making similiar tight cuts on oak. Pretty cool. Here is the demo

I think this guy lost track how many times he has made this deer a long time ago. :D

Thanks James,
The Carter demo makes sense. I was going to make my own guides for small blades, but I might try the Carter now.

Iturra has all versions for $66.

wow, I've never seen anything like that before, and I was really trying to figure out if the guy was actually doing something or just cutting away at the block... I was really surprised to see him pop a reindeer out!!

I don't see why that couldn't be done on any decent, well-tuned band saw.

That was pretty cool. i would have been impressed if he'd gone half as fast.

And to think I spend hours on end in the woods waiting for deer to appear out of "thin air"... all this time I could have been making them on my BS. ;)
Any of these guys working the demos-shows are magicians with what ever gizmo they are peddling, some more interesting than others.

First time I've seen this, it is amazing and seems like magic to me!

While I certainly can't do it and it is impressive use of a bandsaw it is also simply time-on-task. I suspect that the guy in the video has done thousands of these and can do it in his sleep. The first time he did it or saw the cut diagram for it I am sure his head nearly exploded. The first 10 or so went into the trash can. Next 10 were not great - but were better. Rinse-repeat and after a while you get what you saw in the video.

As others have said, I've seen that done at woodworking shows, although the ones I've seen were smaller. The guy (probably the same guy) didn't go as fast as the video, but with even smaller I can see why.

Those guys who do the demos who knows how many times per show and for show after show are something to watch. And not just bandsawing but turning, etc.

I took a course once apon a time with Gwen Hadland, on how to make a puzzle snake. While we all struggled with drawing the pattern out with pencil and getting the cuts right, she would freehand a 64" snake out with no markings at all. And, at a speed and quality that left me in awe.
Here's a link to her page if you are interested!
