Well, the NOVA 1622-44 that I have had on layaway for the last 6 weeks is finally set up and ready to go. I brought it home this afternoon, and boy am I happy!

I got this lathe so I can actually do normal spindle work. (My big lathe only goes up to 1300 rpms, and doesn't have a proper taper in the headstock.) I am officially a business, Old Arbor Turnery, LLC, and I'm trying to find a niche as an architecural woodturner. Now with a machine better suited for spindle work, I can actually send out some literature showing my architectural turnings. Columns, newel posts, and ballusters here I come!

Hutch

P.S. The wife has the digital camera, but I will post a pic later so as to make the gloat official. ;)

Congrats, I too have that lathe and so far so good. It is a very good lathe with a lot of options the bog boys have for a lot less $$.

Hi Matt,
Where can I see some of your work? Am interested in turning Newell posts etc.?I made a jig to turn round and smooth spindles with my 3520a PM lathe. With the extension I can handle 4 ft. Max

Matt, keep posting on the business startup aspect of things. I am interested.

How do you go about selecting clients to send literature to. Just randomly select architects, designers, design/build firms from the yellow pages ?

How are you going to set the prices for things ?

Could you describe the literature you are going to send out ? Does it just describe your mission or show pics of work and prices etc. ?

So here's the Nova. I finally found the camera cables. So far I am a little disappointed in the machining/fit and finish. Though the power is good, the design of the drive system has some flaws. But all in all, it's doing the job well!

Here's one of the bowls I have been working on using the Nova. The greater speed capability has made a piece like this a pleasure to tackle!!

P.S. My big lathe is actually not an Oliver, but it's definitely not going anywhere!! :)

Nice looking bowl, good looking lathe, now a couple of bed extentions, outboard rest, hinged bed section for tail stock, etc., etc.
Best of luck with the new business. Satisfied customers and word of mouth can be your best advertising. Looks like your off to a good start with the bed turnings.

Can't have too many lathes. I can't see how you will do columns on that new lathe though. Ballusters will be longer than 24" also. I'd get a set of drive centers made for your big lathe that are dedicated for that machine. I make spindles on my big lathe down to 1/2" diameter, but it may turn a bit faster than yours. In fact the problem with it is that it turns too fast for 8" columns that are a bit out of balance. But to have 700 lbs. of cast iron under you is very satisfying. I like doing architectural work from turned mouldings to porch posts. Keep the posts coming and keep us updated.

Don't even second guess it. You got a new business;)

Yeah, the columns would not happen on the NOVA. I plan on building an extension for the Rollstone. It's a good 1500 lbs and the speed goes as low as 25 rpms. I also hope to have some custom drive spurs made for it, along with the eventual upgrade to a 3 to 5 hp 1100 rpm motor, vfd , and a gear belt. But the Nova is great for the smaller parts!!
