Ok...the crapsman didn't make it long but it made it long enough to suck me into the vortex. When the motor or whatever broke I was devastated:( So I went on a mission to raise the money to get a lathe that stands by my signature. Today I made a trip to Woodcraft and purchased a Jet 1442. I know its the one with the reeves drive but for a beginner lathe I believe I can live with it and I am sure many would...Pics to come...

No better feeling than spending money to travel deeper into the vortex. Well....let me rephrase that..... no better feeling that doesn't require LOML's attendance.

Congrats Tom. I bought a used 1442 form Woodcraft about a year ago. It was one they used in their class room. It does everything I need it to do. I turn mostly pens, bowls and a little spindle work. I like the fact I can turn the head when working inside a bowl.

Your going to love it.

Dave

Tom, congrat's ! I have had mine for a couple years now and have been more than happy with it. A couple times I almost upgraded to the 1642, but, not being rich I had to ask myself why as the 1442 has done everything I want to date. I do round off the large blanks on the BS first and have had no problems with the reeves drive. Good turnings :D

Congrats Tom, you might as well get ready to get rid of the other tools. "Once you turn you never go flat":D

That is what I turn on and although I constantly threaten to upgrade I have stayed with it. Works well and hard for me...Bill..
