I just finished staining an oak end table with Varathane stain -- My question is -- Would it be necessary to seal the stain before I finish it? I am planning on spraying lacquer. Also, how long should I let the stain dry before finishing? Thanks --- Larry

No sealer necessary. Just 2-3 coats of lacquer.
Minimum 24 hrs. dry time on stain usually.

If you are spraying, you do not need the shellac. Mist on the first coat and let it dry. Then apply your finish coats

Lacquer and stain are buddies. Easiest way to apply a finish, maybe. If you want to fill in some of the grain on that oak you'll need many coats of lacquer. It depends on what you're going for. Be sure to cut your lacquer by fifty percent and spray "wet" coats with the grain and accross the grain. I'd spray six to eight coats before sanding between coats. Lacquer dries quickly but give it a little more time during cooler months. High humidity will cause blushing but don't worry about blushing until your final coat.
