It gives me great sadness to announce that Carl Eyman, a long time participant in Sawmill Creek, died yesterday. About a year ago, he felt it necessary to close down his shop and sell all his tools. Then, last October, he and his wife, Leslie, moved into an assisted-living facility in Terrytown, which is the west bank of New Orleans.

Carl was a wonderful guy. I once asked a question on this forum about building a grandfather clock. Carl not only responded ,but sent me, at no charge , a book on making clocks and several plans for grandfather clocks.
I will miss him. If his website is still up take a look at his work, it is truly incredible.

I was just thinking about Carl yesterday. Actually, I thought of him often, even though I never had the pleasure of meeting him. Just based upon his presence here, he was a very memorable person. A gifted woodworker, but also a gentleman with strong convictions that he did not wear on his sleeve, but which showed through from time to time.

I'm indebted to him for his willingness to share his knowledge of woodworking here, and also to his service in our country's military.

I will miss him--and how much greater is the loss to his family. My sincere condolences go to them.

Solemn regards,

John

Carl always seemed to be very knowledgeable and willing to help. He also seemed (to me) to represent the "non judgemental", "willing to help anyone" attitude that is so representative of the Sawmill Creek forum. Thanks Carl for being a part of the Creek and helping us all. May you rest in peace and may your family be conforted by the memory of the true gentleman that you were.

I had read this earlier, and just couldn't really get a handle on it. I always enjoyed Carl's posts. Straight forward, no nonsense, but always with an edge of understanding, teaching and compassion. Even his posts during/post Katrina were more about other people, and what they lost.

He was a good guy. someone I would have liked to have shot the breeze with and let the conversation follow it's course. I'm going to miss him here on the 'creek.

Peace friend..

I had the pleasure of meeting Carl for the first time as a result of this forum. He was a regular for several years at the annual 18th Century Furniture Conference each January at Colonial Williamsburg. We would always get togehter for converstion, drinks, and a meal or two while we attended the conference. Often we would sit together in Hennage Auditorium for the lectures and demonstrations. He was extremely knowledgeable about Queen Anne Chippendale styles of furniture and his workmanship was outstanding. Of all of his work, I enjoyed most his large Chippendale dining table with its full set of chairs. You can look this up through the archives.

I thoroughly enjoyed the times we were able to get together and talk about a wide variety of subjects. His quiet good humor and wide breadth of knowledge will be sorely missed.

Rest in peace my friend.

Thank you for your kind words about my father. Truly, he was a most exceptional man and friend to all he met. I am fortunate enough to be able to see most of the furniture in his photo gallery every day. At least in that, he will always be with me, and then with his beloved grandchildren... Certainly I will think of him every Sunday morning when I wind the Grandfather clock in the front hall.

I'd like to add a little to this thread. Carl and I lived a couple of blocks apart and our workshops were about half a mile apart. Carl pretty much taught me what little I know about woodworking. He was always available to help me with a project. He used to say I went to him for his opinion and then I did what I wanted. The reason for that is that his opinion on doing something went into a heck of a lot more detail than I was willing to go into.
I know Carl's wife and two sons and his grandchildren and they all follow in his footsteps in being exceptional people.
Suffice it to say that I will miss him a whole lot.
I would like to thank all those sawdust makers who took the time to post on this thread.
