I am finally done with the stair balusters. had 36 to turn. Broke to roughing gouges so i went and bought a p&n gouge. I like it because it as a solid tang. It feels more solid when turning. balusters are turned out of peeler cores. I have posted pictures of the wood chips around my lathe. I ended up with 4 or 5 inches on the floor. I had a blast doing this.

I think I know what he is talking about. It would be after they cut a log into veneer, then there is a dowel that cannot be used for veneer anymore.

Judging by your shop - you have a heck of a lot of fun!

The bar clamps are 3 pieces of tsl glued together. TSL is enineered lumber for truss chords. It is very hard. You cannot drive a 16penny nail through it. I was to lazy to move it anywhere else. Peeler core is the leftover piece from peeling of the veneer. Some were dry and others very wet. still a lot of fun. Made good money doing this. Now my wife wants me to turn some for our house. This what i told her i would do when i bought the big lathe 4 yrs ago. I bad.

How did you break two roughing gouges? Lots of overhang?

I broke the gouges because i hit a very hard knot. I only had an 1 1/2 inches away because of the out of roundness of the stock. My new gouge doesnt even budge when i hit a hard knot.

I just turned 5 eight foot pine posts for a log house rail - boy, those pine knots are hard! I was using my new 1 1/4" Sorby which was just about heavy enough for those knots. Keeps you awake hitting those.
