Byrd Shelix heads from Grizzly

Why are they so much cheaper?

For an 8" Jet Jointer-

Grizzly seems to indicate they are real Byrd heads. Is there a difference?

Robert, Griz sells both Byrd shelix heads and their own brand.

The main difference is the set to the blades. A Byrd head has the blades spiraling around the head with each blade set at an angle to follow that spiral. The Griz brand is set in the same spiral, but square to the head. You get less of a shearing cut than the Byrd, but in my experience, both produce excellent results.

I have a Byrd that I purchased from them on my Jet 6" jointer and worked with a 20" Griz planer with their brand of spiral cutterhead. As I said, excellent results from both.

Why are they so much cheaper? Don't know, but I didn't complain when I got mine for much cheaper than I could find anywhere else.

By the way, they also sell a spiral blade cutterhead that uses long blades which are curved around the head. I've read several reviews here of SMC'ers that have them and experienced excellent results with them as well.

Don, he linked to a Byrd head on Grizzly's site. My guess is that they have larger purchasing power over smaller resellers so they get a substantial savings (or have less overhead). I figure most of the heads are probably sold "pre-installed" in the first place.
