View Full Version : Behlen's Rockard Table Top Varnish over Epoxy Bartop

I poured Polytex 1:1 epoxy on a bartop about 7 days ago. Over all it looks good but a few dust nibs to work on. In the archives there was a schedule calling for 4-5 coats of Behlen's Rockhard Table Top Varnish. Were this many coats needed for protection or just to get the desired look?
I'd be happy if I could go with a couple of coats of a wipe on product if there's not going to be a big sacrifice in resistance and looks.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello and how are you?
I did 7 layers of Varnish/reducer mix adding less reducer with each layer. Sanding between each layer and wiping down with the Behlens reducer. The reducer is not just mineral oil. The Behlen is like hard (I thought) to work with until I used the reducer/mix. At least on the practice runs I did.
I waited two weeks until I put varnish on the epoxy. (Have to let it gas out.) After my seven layers it was almost a month until I did sanding and polish. If you can't smell the varnish anymore it's ready. I was looking for that high gloss piano look. Before a party I put a little clear coat car polish and I can slide a bottle across it. Guest are amaised at that.
I used 7 layers because I wanted it strong and protected and have the ability to allways sand it down a little is I get a real bad groove in it.
Have fun and post some pics

Can the Behlens/reducer mix be wiped on because I always have problems brushing on a long project. The bartop is 13' long.
The bar is already set up in the owners basement I'm just trying to get the top done. It won't take a lot of abuse but I'd like it to be prepared for the eventual mishap a bar always has.
If i figure out how I will post some pics.

I'm sure you can wipe it on. I tried on the arm rail but I wanted it thick.
I first tried with a sponge type tool but had my best luck with a good soft brush.
