I am thinking of ordering a back issue or two of the Woodworking at home DVD's prior to subscribing. For those of you who have these DVD's, how do you like them and which back issues would you recommend? I am most interested in learning techniques right now rather than looking for specific projects.

Thanks,
Wes Billups

Wes,
It's getting to be one...if not the only..."mag" that I really look forward to in my woodworking off season. I don't know what your interests are...so it's hard to say what back issue you'd be interested in. The website is pretty extensive...check it out.

All in all it's a class act...and Chris Dehut a member of SMC so if you have any questions I'm sure he'll jump in.

From one Wes to another ;) - try it out. I recently got my third volume and really do look forward to it as much if not more than Fine Woodworking. It's not a slick and polished style like FWW - it's more of a personal / conversational presentation. Still, it's very professionally done and the DVD format is great.

If you haven't already been bit by the turning bug, Dick Sing will probably make that happen through your viewing of the dvd. I really enjoy them - I went back and got them all when I subscribed (through the SMC offer ran by Chris).

I've also started some carving due to the presentations made by Dave Reilly (sp?).

If you can't tell, I'm a big fan of Woodworking at Home and highly recommend it to a home woodworker as it will help show you how instead of just trying to read how. I hope that reads how I think it does!

I absolutely love it. Woodworking is one of those things where it is easier to understand how to do something by watching than by reading instructions. I've been a subscriber since issue 1.

Frankly, I think Chris DeHut has hit on a terrific concept. I think the idea of a magazine on a disk is a great one that has broad application way beyond the woodworking arena. If he does it right, and works out the advertising kinks, he could turn the idea into a gold mine. If he's looking a good corporate lawyer....

Also, how can you help but love Dick Sing?

You people are making me blush :o

As others have mentioned, I can try to answer any questions here or via email (see our website for contact info). It is true our magazine is new (only on the 10th issue), it is very innovative (Its a DVD video magazine, you watch it like a TV show and can read transcripts of the project stories), it's good (at least in my opinion - very biased mind you), and you won't find anyone working harder in publishing than us to deliver the absolute best magazine possible.

The magazine concept we have is still in it's infancy. There is so much more that we want to do that we feel like a race horse stuck in the starting gate of the greatest race around. It's all just a matter of time as we work very hard to really exploit this concept into what it's true potential can be.

Blushing,

Chris DeHut

Don't let the shyness words fool ya... that Mr. DeHut is a camera hog...;) But he's not all that ugly so it's safe to let the women and children in the room without scaring them....too much.

That, as others have said about my voice "High pitched, nasel, cheesehead accented, voice is a dead give away he isn't an actor".

Chris is doing an excellent job with this unique publication. I still haven't caught up on all the issues due to "time challenges", but have enjoyed everything I've watched so far. Like any "magazine" every story will not be of primary interest to you, but even those will entertain and provide you with a view to tools and techniques that may not be familiar to you. I've already found it helpful in several new areas that I've been playing with, even though they might be in slightly different context to the tutorials on the disk.

Someone-

For the newer ones to this site, would someone furnish the website, so we might subscribe, or at least look in on it?

Wes,

I've been getting it from the beginning and haven't been disappointed yet. Chris DeHut and his crew do a great job, just wish it was longer.

Ok, you guys have convinced me that I have been missing out. I think I'll go ahead and order a subscription. Does anyone know if they are planning on printing (burning) more DVD's? I have noticed they are currently out of a couple of editions and I'd prefer to just wait and order the whole set once they have more.

Thanks again,
Wes Billups

If your tight on space in your shop check out the issue with the shop cabinets. Chris did a wonder full job optimizing space with his wall cabinets. I implemented about 10 of them in my shop. Can wait till he comes out with something for the lower cabinets.

Hi Wes,

Thanks for the order - it is being processed and mailed today. I also sent you an email verifying one of the items you purchased (I tried to save you some money).

As for the back issues. Our goal and plan is to always have them available. However, issue #1 is currently out of stock and we are hoping to get them back in stock near the end of the year. In the meantime, you may want to call your local Rockler Woodworking store to see if they have any back issues in stock. We shipped each store several copies of each issue. From the feedback I am getting, most of them are sold out already but you still may want to call and check.

You can also purchase them at the Rockler stores for $6.95 each as opposed to $8.95 each from our website.

I don't know if Rockler plans on continually stocking the back issues or not. I was hoping they would, but I have not heard if they will or not. They will be carrying the current issues each time they come out though.

I like many others have subscribed from the first issue. Personally I learn better from watching than from reading, thus the dvd medium really works for me. I like the idea that Chris and Dick are NOT actors, but regular guys.

I'm not sure why others have yet to copy your idea of a dvd magazine but I wish you all much success.

BTW, Chris don't sell out and put a hugh Timesaver belt sander in your shop like Norm did.

PS. I have forgotten what the orginal post was about... sorry ya'll

Hi William,

Our concept of Woodworking at Home doesn't work well with machinery that large. If I were to put one of those in the shop, I would be out of space in that tiny 11' x 22' shop we film in.

While I hope to setup a larger studio for filming the magazine, chances are real good that it will look just like the shop we have now expect a little larger. The only reason I would like a larger space is to be more efficient with the filming processes and to provide a little more staging room for the "in process" projects.

There are two machines I feel a little guilty about in our current shop: that 16" lathe and the wide drum sander. My only defence on selecting those machines is that many home woodworkers now have wide drum sanders and as for the lathe, well, I simply wanted one that big - you never know when you need to turn a large leg for a table.

Just what I need! What issue was that? I subscribed yesterday, but didn't order back issues. Guess I should have!

Hello, I was watching my old collection of videos, and realized I am now missing this one. I've been looking for it. Does anyone have it want to sell?, maybe even let me borrow it if nothing else to watch? Thanks, Larry

I found this thread interesting, but when I tried to click on the link for woodworking at home, I get a blank page. A google search also won't get me to that particular site, just stories about the site like this thread. Any suggestions to get to the actual site.
Thanks,
John

It is a 12 year old thread.

John, these necro-threads always trip me too. Off hand, I'd say the DVD magzine didn't fly back then. Too bad - it sounded good didnt it? But there's something roughly similar at 360 Woodworking dot com if you are still interested.

Larry,

If you're serious about finding this, please post a "want ad" in the Classified section. Want Ads are only allowed there.

I've closed the thread but I'll leave it up just in case. You don't often see someone reviving a 12 year old thread! :)
