Sanding the Wings

When sanding things like a square, winged or natural edge bowl, how do you go about sanding the outer projections without loosing fingers?

I sand by hand or lock the lathe in position and use a drill. No matter what you do - don't be in a rush and be sure to go through all the grits!

I have a harbor freight angle drill that I use with CSUSA hook and loop sanding discs, then I sand with the grain by hand.
