Well it is finished. I used some of the suggestions that were made here and came up with the following. Red mallee burl with an African blackwood pedestal. My first functional pedestal. 5" x 10" AO finish but I have not buffed it yet.

Toney - in a word - Sweet! Beautiful color combination! Love the overall form - especially the pedestal! You have a winner with this one!

Forgot to mention that I really like the photos also! Very nice work!

NICE! The pedestal has great proportions (in my opinion). It creates a nice goblet effect and appears much more integral than some pedestals.

Toney,
This is, I believe, is your best to date. Form, Color, and Finish are excellent. I really like the way the pedestal really works with the Hollow Form. Simply wonderful.

Normally I don't like thick pedestals but I think this really works well. Great job on everything.

Definitely a great piece of work. The pedestal is great, and it feels more natural to me than some of the other pencil-thin pedestals I've seen. The color in that burl and the NE is amazing. Beautiful!

I had to search for take one. For all who wish to do the comparison, here it is: A sure improvement!

Toney,

Both versions are absolutely beautiful. How do you mount the pedestal to the vessel to get such a clean line between the two?

Toney, That is very nice! I love the burl and the blackwood together! The rim of the bowl is perfect in its up and down waves.

Chris,

My way of doing it was to turn and sand the pedestal with a tenon on both ends, one for the chuck and one to match the recess in the bowl. I then epoxied the pedestal to the bowl. The next day I chucked it up and with a foam cover block on the tail stock, I put just enough pressure on it for stability. I then blended the bowl and pedestal. I then flipped it around and turned off as much of tenon as I dared and then parted that down to a thin piece. Cut off the nub and sanded the bottom.

The whole time after joining the two parts was a bit nerve racking. I could envision all the BAD stuff that could happen but I took light cuts at pretty low revolutions.

Thanks to all for the comments. I do appreciate it.
