that would be more classified as a chip collector

And if you leave the planer unplugged, that is silent too.

except when she snored. Our 160 pound Newfoundland mix Ubu could collect enough dust to repave Texas after a windstorm. It was always easy to tell where she'd been sleeping by the little dust piles.

I have had one of those mounted in my old Craftsman table saw for years. It catches the chips but the dust still flies. Maybe I should borrow Bill's dog to catch what the chip collector misses. :D

Or is it battery powered?

I've had a cyclone for a while now and i still dont have a machine hookup for my jointer (or planer) yet. I just let the chips drop out of the chute to the floor and clean up with a broom and big dust pan afterwards.

Angie,
Mine was gravity powered. :D

Seems this invention of mine has "prior art" as they call it in the patent world. And here I had visions of riches once I patented it .....

Maybe not totally silent, but very efficient at collecting very small particles.

That's so old school. :D

I guess that's similar to my dust collector. Every horizontal surface in the shop.

I always thought I had a good idea for a woodworking shop. Dust collection would be easy, noise wouldn't be a problem, but getting materials and projects to and from would be a PITA, not to mention the expensive and cumbersome safety gear.

Just have a shop in an unpressurized section of the space station, with its own solar panels.

Evidently you don't do much work at the jointer...AND that pan won't catch nearly as much fine dust as your lungs will!

Brand New ! Cyclone and ducting is in progress :D

Unless the blades are extremely dull. I've never known my jointer or planer to make dust - always small chips that are too heavy to get airborne.

That's inspirational. Your offcuts become meteors. Except for the ones which become space debris.

It's also quite quiet if it's unpressurized.

Doug,

Try a little experiment. Rub some light oil on the walls of the chip chute, joint some wood, and then look in the chip chute. It obviously won't be like sanding dust, but you may be surprised. It also depends on what you're jointing, depth of cut, feed speed, lots of variables.

Here's my contribution: a "silent" cordless screwdriver.
