If you live near Pittsburgh and you want free wood, Alcoma Golf Course in Penn Hills (East of the city) has an enormous pile of mostly maple. They did a lot of tree clearing over the winter. The wood is excellent. My garage is filled and I have been forbidden to return to the pile by the loml...:( Some of the pieces that I have pulled out have had a nice tiger figure. There were some logs that were burled all around (18 inches in diameter). I saw more of those in the pile, but couldn't get to them. The pile has been picked over by people looking for firewood, but what is left are large pieces that are not easily thrown in a truck. You will definitly need a chainsaw. I talked to the people who work there and they said that it is free for the taking. The pile is in the lower parking log and is easily accessible, no problem for a truck with a trailer.
