sycamore HF

been kinda busy and hadnt posted in a while...but got a little time and turned this sycamore HF...I didnt like the color so I put some stain on it...It came out OK but next time I might try dye.......10 X 9 deft lacquer

David, That is a great HF and the finish is like glass! I like the center and pith oreintated that way, tough to do but a good look when completed.

It is a Bullseye to me! Dead on....

David - nice work! Nice form and outstanding finish! Color looks fine to me - but if you haven't tried dyes before - give them a shot. I like the way they can enhance the wood without hiding the grain.

I really like that David. The pith running through it like that really sets it apart from all the other HF's I've seen. The finish is dazzling too. :)

Why would there be a preference for Dye over Stain, or visa-versa?

Steve - a dye will actually change the color of the wood. A stain uses colored pigments to add color to a piece. Those pigments remain on the surface and - depending on how many coats - can cover/hide the grain.

Ah, got it. I guess that's why I've never liked stains. Dyes look pretty interesting though.

Nice form David. Looks like you have the deft down to an art. I never would've thought deft to come out that glossy. You did a great job and I love the grain orientation. As said earlier. Perfect bullseye!:cool:
