View Full Version : Wood to glass glue?

I delivered a mesquite dining room yesterday :D that included a pair of corner china cabinets that were supposed to have a double plate groove in the shelves...which I forgot about. In a previous unit, I'd set the glass in a wood frame with the grooves. These six shelves are full size, and I can't retrofit a frame without cutting glass down (and it was too costly to do that).

What I'd like to do is cut some grooves in a 2-1/2" wide piece of stock maybe 1/2" thick and glue them to the existing shelves. That seems like the easiest solution to me...but I want a GOOD bond that won't make a helluva mess. Anybody got any experience here?

TIA...KC

I use latex caulk. I can find latex in many colors, and I find it easier to shape and clean up than silicone. It is also possible to mix your own colors into it to match nearly anything.

Duct tape. It works on everything else.

Nice link I just bookmarked it. Thanks for posting it. and thanks SMC for archiving it in a searchable index.
My monthly subscription to SMC is invaluable.

i use dap latex clear for bedding glass in stain grade window sashes.

it needs to be flexible, the wood will move but the glass won't.

ease of cleanup is directly related to the quality, btw. the cheap no-name caulks will be runny and quite difficult to clean up even with a razor scraper. name brand better stuff cleans pretty easy when it sets.

So you have glass shelves that were supposed to have grooves ground in them to hold display plates upright? Can the grooves be added as a retrofit by a glass shop?

If not, it is my understanding that for wood to glass bonding silicone is the only option with any strength. I have attached picture frames to the face of mirrors as a retrofit to make large old mirrors look like hung frames. Acrylic latex caulk doesn't stick well to the smooth glass and becomes brittle over time. Clear silicone is maybe the least noticeable?
