Well here are a couple of first attempts at the lathe.

Don't laugh too hard:D

The sides of the bowl I got down to about 3/16" before I called it quits there. I think I'm getting the hang of sharpening too, I had nice ribbons running off my tools today.:D

Those are pretty nice. I think I might take that idea of the candle holder. Nice!

Nice work Matt! Really like the curly candle holder! Keep experimenting - it's how we all learned!

Thanks for the comments, makes for some good confidence boosters.

I thought the figured Maple would be the harder of the two to work but the Walnut was giving me fits. Catches and chipping, tear outs you name it. The Maple worked very smooth in comparison.

Congrats on your first turnings. I too like the curly maple candle holder. Well done.

Matt, You are doing fine with your turning! We all started somewhere and are still somewhere just a little farther down the road! I like the curl in the bowl and candle holder, adds lot to simple turnings!

Keep at it, the sky is the limit

Gotta admit it is pretty fun when you can work start to finish right there at the lathe and watch it come to conclusion right before my eyes.

That curly wood, I have quite a few short pieces of board that are like 1x10'x24"-40" long with bad areas that make it unusable for other projects and that I just didn't know what the heck I was going to do with. Can't just cut it up to burn, way to nice for that. I think I finally figured out how to make use of them. Should be able to piece several segmented pieces together with them.

Is there a glue that some of you use to give shorter glue up times? I normally use titebond in the different formulas but there are times when I just hate to have to wait till the next day to work on something if you know what I mean. Never tried that Gorilla stuff but I picked up a small bottle to try. Any advice?
