Finish for chess boards?.....

Is there a preferred finish for chess boards? I have two in the niddle of gluing up and i realized that I didn't have a plan for a finish. I do know that I would want the finish to just be clear and I would like to enhance the grain without darkening if its possible.

Any suggestions or help?
