I am just starting out in woodworking and I was wondering if anybody knows of any woodworking classes in the Vancouver, Canada area. I am looking to do it as a hoby for now and see where it leads me later. I have worked in sawmills for over 25 years as a sawyer and have collected some wood along the way.

Thanks in advance to any help

Ray, welcome to Sawmill Creek. I'm sure that there are some members who live a lot closer to you and can help you out. I did, however, find a woodworking school that is very close to you. It's the Inside Passage School of Fine Woodworking. You can check them out at http://www.insidepassage.ca/news.htm. On the Canadian Woodworking http:www.canadianwoodworking.com (http://www.canadianwoodworking.com/) site there is a list of woodworking clubs in Canada http://www.canadianwoodworking.com/clubs.php. There may be one close to you. That site seems to have a lot of information on woodworking in Canada as well as the magazine. Good luck and let us know how things are going.

Wow -- Charles must type faster than I do.;):D

Hi Ray, I'm in Burnaby and am also a beginning woodworker (or Jr. Amateur Woodbutcher as I'm self-titled. :) ) Aside from the other suggestions posted above, here are a few more:

The Pacific Woodworkers Guild.com (http://pacificwoodworkersguild.com) They meet in Richmond monthly and one of these months I'm going to go. :)

The Greater Vancouver Woodturners Guild (http://www.gvwg.ca/) They meet in New West.

Lee Valley (http://www.leevalley.com) Danger! Danger! The health of your wallet is severely threatened! They have two stores in the Lower Mainland, on SE Marine by the Knight St. bridge and on United Blvd. in Coquitlam. They hold a regular seminar series each season and donate the proceeds to charity. They are also the single best company, bar none, that I've ever had the pleasure to deal with.

KMS Tools (http://www.kmstools.com) in Coquitlam also has woodworking classes.

Also check your local school board night school courses. I'm currently enrolled in a Thursday evening session at Burnaby Central, which gives me 2 1/2 hours of shop time with heavy-duty equipment (abused by generations of schoolkids!) each week. The supervisor is a retired cabinetmaker and is very helpful.

And each October there's the Vancouver Woodworking Show (http://www.canwestshows.com/woodshow/newSite/vancouverShow.html). They're now at the TradeEx in Abbotsford (used to be at the Cloverdale Rodeo site). Lots of clubs have booths there and many put on presentations as do many of the dealers. This is *the* place to get the best prices on equipment, especially big ticket items.

Cheers,
Rob

I would like to thank those who responded, I actually live 15 minutes away from the Inside Passage wood working school and didn't realize it. I will definately check out the other sites.
