The problem with this lathe is the DC motor and power train. DC is great for getting the low speeds but doesn't have any torque at low speed. The other problem is only one pulley, which will really limit the speeds variation. If it had a two (2) H.P., AC, 3 phase, motor with a VFC and a three (3) step pulley system, I think that it would then be a real serious turning machine.

Very similar to the Nichols lathe that I had for about 10 years. My Nichols had wheels and a large sand reservoir as this one does. My Nichols weighed 800 lb. and I had 400 lb of sand in it. I turned some big stuff on it.

With a 3 pulley setup and a 2 HP DC motor I had plenty of power. This lathe appears to have only 2 pulleys which IMO isn't enough for a lathe with a very large capacity. To turn both large and small pieces a good selection of speed ranges is a must.
