Just gorgeous! Love the finish on the Walnut piece. What finish did you use here?...Bill..

Bernie & Bill,

Thank you for the kind words. The finish is RUST-OLEUM Crystal Clear Enamel. Many(spray can) coats with 320 grit wet sandings between some of the coats. I have yet to find a finish that I really like.

I sometimes use BO and Beeswax. The best I can say about that is that it's quick. Sometimes I think I should just use black paint. grin

The ring on the boxelder is mixed from epoxy and ground pink sidewalk chalk.

Paul,

I depends on temperature, humidity, and how thick you apply the finish. I didn't have the best of conditions so I waited 24 hours between coats.

You can get away doing things with wet sandpaper that you can't using dry. You can gently wet sand soft coats that would ball up with dry paper only.

I know this is another topic within a topic, did you just use water or oill with wet sand? Amazing looking finish!

Paul,

Cold water, no cotamination from oil, what can I say, "it worked for me."

Steve,

Thanks for your help.

Nice job on both of them. Really like the top details.

My kids used to grind up sidewalk chalk by the buckets (they called it fairy dust) ... I never thought we'd have a use for it. Now we do.

Bob,
They cracked me up. I especially thought the second one in dark brown, with the Chinese guy with the Fu Manchu moustache wearing the round funny hat was especially comical. How did you find a piece of wood with a photograph like that in it?

I didn't know you could make them from firewood, mine always end up as firewood.
Nicely done.

Very nicely done, beautiful bowls.

I read about using "canned air" from several inches away between coats of spray finishes. It reduces the time between coats. "Canned air" is the stuff you use to clean computer keyboards, etc.

Box elder, isn't that actually a maple?

Bob Haverstock
03-31-2009, 6:15 AM
Ron,

The light colored bowl is boxelder. The other pieces that I have cut from the same log have striking pink bands and blushes.

The walnut is about 5.5" and the boxelder is about 6".

That must be the guy that assembled the lathe, he has to thin of a face to be related to me. My lathe is a JWL1220 that I purchased last year.

Did someone say "Vortex?" I think the only thing that is saving me is that 6" X 6" tied across my butt.

Bob, I think your turnings are great and the finish is top notch! I have turned more nice pieces from firewood than I can remember! Everytime I go to throw a chunk in the stove I see one that has a nice bit of figure or change is color that just begs to be put on the lathe! Great work and keep at it!

I like both. Very nice.

I recently started using Watco spray lacquer. The spay does not leave marks and the coats dry on 15 minutes.

Your finish is superior but takes much longer.

Is it appropriate to suggest that anyone who uses box elder or walnut for firewood should be shot?

I realize that, Bob- from your opening post.
My question was..... isn't boxelder a type of maple?

I understand the correct name for boxelder is Manitoba Maple.
