I wasn't sure where to post this as it involves flat work, turning, and carving. So thought add it to projects.
It's a large dish/bowl (blank maxed out my lathe) made out of 624 segments. It actually took a lot longer to build the blank or make the legs than it took to turn it. The design is all myself.
I built three sets of legs (and carved all) but the first two sets didn't look good on the bowl. Finally I decided on this shape and design.
Was the first time I tried incorporating carving into a project.
It's about 16"x11.5". Made out of walnut and maple finished with BLO+Shellac. I have some progress pic's too that will post if anybody is interested.

The photos are much worse than what it really looks.
Finally got something to sign my works with http://forum.canadianwoodworking.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I think that is beautiful! Since I don't turn, I certainly would be interested in progress pics. I'm still trying to figure out how you did it?????

Mreza - very impressive work! This looks like it should be in an art gallery somewhere! Love the design, wood combination and finish! Really cool piece! Thanks for sharing!

Nice, real nice Mo...
Really a piece of art.

How it is turned is way above me. But I sure like the design.
I would like to see some progress pics.
Fantastic job again. Thanks for giving us a look see.

I'd like to see the progress pics as I am getting dizzy trying to figure out how you set up the blank at the handles!

Very nice work.

That is really cool. Is that half of a double hollow form?

I'm not sure where you should post it either Mreza but... I do know that posting here was a better choice than posting it at the local U.S. Post Office with the F.B.I.'s 10 most wanted as... it deserves more credit. :)

Simply stunning to me and I don't have enough time left in this life to figure out how you did it and duplicate so... I will just view your's with great admiration and call it time well spent.

Excellent...

Be careful, the Coke ad guys and gals might decide to take that last picture and run it as an advert--"Fine Art deserves a Coke and a smile". :)

Such a nice piece, and I can only barely imagine the time and effort that went into it. Thanks for showing!

Thanks everybody for the comments.
The coke was to get a sense of measurements.
Here are some progress pics, starting with all the pieces cut and gluing the rings:

Then after the glue up of the rings and flattening them using a drum sander started stacking them. Using an 8" long bolt mounted it on the lathe. The blank is slightly larger than 12" (my lathe capacity) so should turn the head to be able to turn the thing.

Here I started turning the outside first. The first few rings done.

More in the next post...

Started to turning the inside now. Realized the bolt is sticking way too much out and is causing problems. Remounted it with the bolt going inside the spindle shaft.

Then going to bandsaw to cut it into two. Again, (with doing careful calculations) this was the maximum size my bandsaw could handle:

finally ready for the glue up:

Simply amazing.... Beautiful work of art!

I can't say anything better than what my buddy "Sarge" said up above there...

I was hoping you had progress pictures. I had envisioned a different process. Again - great job! :)

Thanks everybody for the comments. I'm a relatively newbie and am still learning and love to always challenge myself. This was bowl No #12 that I turned. I am already thinking of designing something more challenging.

I would nominate this as the most original and stunningly beautiful piece of work I have seen in 3+ years here in the Creek.

And I have no intentions or desire to turn!

Well done!

I do a little segmenting too. I really enjoy your piece. It's absolutely beautiful. Gotta hold your breath when you make the split? I've got to try this technique.:D

Mreza

I don't know when I've seen a more beautiful design with such outstanding execution.

Thanks very much for posting the pictures.
