I recently finished up a few birdhouses that I started in January. I've got some more, but I need to turn roofs for them. They all have quilted maple roofs, with walnut, mahogany, and ash houses.

Really nice. Will make great gifts if that is what you plan to do with them.

First off Dave very cool ornaments,
secondly, I'm interested to now how you turn the roof portion of your birdhouse. Do you work with a mini lathe? what type of headstock drive center and tail stock center do you use?
My wife and I have been working on a craft project, making lighthouses and the roof is just like your birdhouse roof. The problem I am having using my big lathe is the drive centers are to big to allow me to get the top of the roof down to a good proportioned size.
Thanks for any info you can give me.

Lynn,
On these I turned the top of the houses to 1 3/8", the same size as a forstner bit I have. In the roof blank I make a shallow mortise with the forstner bit (prior to turning), then drill it to fit a wine stopper mandrel I have. I mount the roof blank on the lathe using the stopper mandrel and turn it from there. I included pics in case that doesn't make sense.

Dave,
Thanks for showing us Newbs the way you tackle the challenges involving mounting the work. Very helpful indeed.
