The vessel is BL maple and the finial is ebony. About 7 in. in dia. The beads are made with my shop-made beading tool (My secret weapon). The lid has a secret finial on the inside.

Wally,

That's a wonderful vessel. Isn't it one of the pieces you brought to the Desert Woodturning Roundup's instant gallery? If so, as wonderful as your pictures are, the piece is even nicer in person.

Do you mind my asking, how did you sand each of those beads? The finish if flawless, yet each bead retains that crisp-just-cut appearance.

Very well done.

PS: For those of you who'd like to see DWR Wally's instant gallery entries, follow this link and click on the "Gallery" link at the top of the page: http://azwoodturners.org/

Wally's entries are numbers 25, 26, and 27. They're well worth scrolling through the gallery to see. My own humble entry (the last item in the gallery) won the prestigious "Best Lamp in Show" award. (I'm joking. It was the only lamp and no award was given.)

You're right David, this piece was one of the 3 that I had at the symposium.

Actually, my tool works so well for me that I can usually start sanding with 320 and go to 400 and 600. I sand in reverse part of the time. I sand the beads one at a time with narrow strips of SP. Beading is kind of fun to do. It's always possible to screw up one of the beads so I kind of hold my breath for the last 2 or 3 on the piece.

The finish is several coats of Daly's Ben Matte tung oil, polished in.

Wonderful piece, Wally. I love the colors and the finial is just great not to take anything away from the beading. Thanks for showing it.

All the best.

Wonderful piece, made even more wonderful in that you made it with a shop-made tool. Care to post a pic of it?? I've been thinking about one myself lately. Tutorial in progress??....

What's BL maple?

What's BL maple?
BL = Big Leaf (I asked on another thread.)

BL...Big leaf maple grows in the Pac. NW, where I lived for most of my life. Most of the maple burl as used by woodturners is BL maple. It is often highly figured...Most quilted and fiddleback maple is Big Leaf maple.
