Hello, I've lurking for quite a while now and finally finished my first piece to date.
This is a great forum and site! I've learned quite a bit with regards to turning and all the associated skills-from general carpentry (to build the room to house my lathe and support machinery) to finishing the end piece. Anyways here it is- a turned Easy Rougher Handle.http://%5BURL=http://s608.photobucket.com/albums/tt166/Glenn_W_2009/?action=view&current=EasyRoughtHandle.jpg%5D%5BIMG%5Dhttp://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt166/Glenn_W_2009/th_EasyRoughtHandle.jpg%5B/IMG%5D%5B/URL%5D
don't know why the link breaks...
Okay, I got it as squared away as possible.http://%5BURL=http://s608.photobucket.com/albums/tt166/Glenn_W_2009/?action=view&current=EasyRoughtHandle.jpg%5D%5BIMG%5Dhttp://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt166/Glenn_W_2009/th_EasyRoughtHandle.jpg%5B/IMG%5D%5B/URL%5Dhttp://%5BURL=http://s608.photobucket.com/albums/tt166/Glenn_W_2009/?action=view&current=EasyRoughtHandle.jpg%5D%5BIMG%5Dhttp://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt166/Glenn_W_2009/th_EasyRoughtHandle.jpg%5B/IMG%5D%5B/URL%5D

Glenn,
There's the picture, It looks great! I have a lot of respect for you turners;) Owned a lathe for years and never used it... I was too afraid!
Afraid that I would get sucked deeper into the vortex that you guys talk about and spend more $$$ on my WW habit:D

Glenn, Looks like you have been busy and have lots of wood and stone to keep you busy! How much did your retrofit on the Rikon cost you? Looks like all second hand stuff, a man with like minded ideas!

Keep at it and keep us posted!

Thanks all,
I've got a nice sized pile or three, they should keep me turning 'til midsummer. I'll be posting more work as the pieces are completed.

Eric-- I hear you, I owned my Rikon for a couple of years before I turned on it, but I was just too under-budgeted. lol

Jeff--The retrofit cost more than I payed for the lathe- about $325 for the motor, controller, pulleys, wood, aluminum sheet and miscellaneous hardware. I actually got lucky with the motor and only payed $100 for it off eBay and about the same price for the controller. Of course this was a year or so before the economy went south. Now you can't even find a good used 1HP DC Motor anywhere near that price.

Steve- Thanks, I thought I did pretty good for my first completed piece. Had a lot of tear-out , but my main concern was blending the curves as smoothly as possible while retaining the functionality required of a working tool. A good bit of power-sanding was required to achieve this though.
