I got it at a yard sale for $3. The whole piece is about 11" x 24" x 2", but this little slice is just 2" x 4". It is pretty light so at first I figured it was redwood burl, but now I don't know. I held it to a belt sander for a couple of minutes and the bandsaw marks are still showing. I put wax on one side and dewaxed shellac on the other to see what it might look like.

What do you think?

well finally I've noticed somebody close to San Diego! and for the piece it kinda looks like some kind of pine or something. it has those long grain lines and it's not too dense like you said because of the weight. I'm not sure, just a guess

Hey Jarrod!

I love San Diego. I lived in Escondido, San Marcos, San Diego State, Point Loma, San Carlos, Chula Vista, and Linda Vista.

Moved around a lot.

Could pine be that dark? I didn't even know pine had burls! Now I know.

I just looked at specific gravity of dry walnut. Some rate it as low as .51 spec. gravity when bone dry, which this is.

Actually, bones can be wet. But this isn't.

Could be walnut burl.
