I'm going to suggest again that you look at the Gast 0522 currently in stock for $55 from Surplus Supplies. I received mine yesterday and temporarily assembled it to make sure everything was going to work OK. It's pulling 20" of mercury using a 3" PVC coupler for the drum and a home made rotary adapter. I put a small 5" African sumac bowl on and flipped the switch and it took both hands and a considerable amount of force to break the seal and remove the bowl from the drum. If my math is correct I'm getting just under 10 pounds per square inch and the surface area is just over 7 square inches on a 3" diameter drum. That's 70 pounds of force holding the bowl in place. More than enough to take the light cuts and sanding to finish the bottom of a bowl.

There are 2 things you may want to be aware of, first the pump is 220v only. Not a big deal if you already have 220 (I branched off of the 220v outlet that was dedicted to my bandsaw). Second is that the threads on the air filters that Steve specified in his tutorial are a non standard 9/16" X 24 thread. They come with an aluminum 1/2" hose barb so it's not that big of a deal.

i was just looking to see if there was anything cheaper, my wallet only has $60 in it right now, so that wouldnt be enough to cover shipping just the pump, that doesnt include hoses. if i dont find a cheaper pump before i get money i will go for that gast pump

My order with Surplus supplies included the pump, 2 air filters, a ball valve, a vacuum gauge, a muffler, and a small bushing and was just a hair over $100 with shipping.

Even if you got a decent 110v vacuum pump for free you're more than likely going to spend at least $60 on the additional parts required hook everything up; hose, hose barbs, hose clamps, tees, etc.

All told I'm pretty sure I spent a little over $200 on my setup, that includes the list above plus everything sourced locally from HD and Lowes, a new 220v receptacle and plug, romex, double pole switch, 50' hose, all of the hose fittings, a double sealed bearing and o rings for my shop made rotary adapter, and a few other odds and ends that are escaping me at the moment.

I also don't think you can do it for $60. I just finished mine and...

110V 2.5 CFM pump from Harbor Freight (sale) $70, plus another $10 off (coupon)
Regulator/Filter from HF $30 (tossed the regulator/gauge into the junk box)
Vacuum Gauge $20
I had most of the valves, fittings and hoses setting in the junk box, but if I had to buy them it would be another $30 to $50
Looks a but north of $100 for me

Jason

Curtis;

I did exactly as Jason did and I have $212 in my setup using Steve's design. My advice; save your pennies and make it happen. You will not be dissapointed.

If you are looking to save money on a rotary adapter, consider an approach like this:

All,

Well it looks like the Surplus Center and eBay are fresh out of good deals on vacuum pumps that I can use for a chucking system.

I am going to use a friends plans, Bill Tarelton, to put this together--with his help.
http://billswoodcreations.com/vacuum-chuck.html

Unless I can find a better option soon, I am going for the Harbor Freight 25% off coupon on T-Day for the 2-stage 3CFM pump they list
http://www.harborfreight.com/two-stage-3-cfm-air-vacuum-pump-66466.html (http://www.harborfreight.com/two-stage-3-cfm-air-vacuum-pump-66466.html)

I think that should work well.

\Curtis, I have been using an old compressor out of an old dehmidifier that cost me nothing on curb many years ago. I can pull 21" with it all day long. I used some 1/4" copper and some old 1/4" stainless tubing I had around. The vacuum gage was free also from a rommage sale, so allways be on the lookout for the free box or the to give away items on the curb you never know what you will find. I bought a HF pump and have never even plugged in in yet, but in ten years when the old compressor gives up I will be ready!

I do everything on the cheap, but then again I have been saving things for longer than you have been in this world!

Good luck with your project,

Jeff
