3 weeks After Ordering a steel city 3 h.p. table saw (with granate top) from my local woodcraft store. They have finally found out that the saw is now on back order until the end of April!. This would'nt be so bad but I sold my contractor saw last weekend after I was assured the saw would be here this week.
I am an OK carpenter who wants to improve my skills and projects. I like the Idea of a riving knife. I also like the idea of a top that won't rust. in a Minnesota garage.
Any suggestions for a quality substitute for the Steel City? Thank you

I have the 1-3/4 hp version, and love it. So if it were me, I'd wait.
But if you do need it sooner, I believe Grizzly makes a cabinet saw with similar specs, includes a riving knife, and is in the same price range. I don't know the model number, but you should be able to find it quickly on their website.

You could try Woodworker's Supply. They are a Steel City dealer, and big enough that they might have the saw that you want in stock. You could have the saw that you want in just a few days.

Art,

Your a dollar short and a couple of days to late. I just sold a less than one year old saw exactly like you wanted to a guy in Wyoming, MN.
I offered to deliever it to him, that kind of sealed the deal. I had it posted on craiglist for about 9 hours, and it sold. I got a pretty good price on it.
In the morning call the trading post in rochester 1-866-402-5599 and gordonsville 1-877-888 POST. Their web sit is the-trading-post.com. They had stocked the saw when I bought it. I claimed it before it arrived, but they had planned to stock it.
Good luck.

Well I don't know where you are from, but St. Louis Craig's list had two Unisaws listed. One was a right tilt for $750 with biesemeyer fence. Best of luck:)

I have the 3Hp Steel City Cab Saw with the cast iron tops and it is by far the nicest saw I have owned ever. So if it were me I would wait or maybe consider the unit witht the cast top. Either unit worth the wait IMHO.

I ordered what Rod's got on Monday and am drooling while I wait it's arrival.

It's a bit more $ but I've used a SC, Grizz, PM66 and of course a Uni. All are very nice but the General was what I wanted in the end. All IMHO are buys I doubt anyone would regret in the end

A new Unisaw, the only way to go besides a General

A saw having a rustable top should not deter you from getting it, IMO. There's this stuff call T-9 Bioshield. Awesome stuff, and not expensive - I can't remember - maybe $15. Do a quick Google and read about it. I put it on everything once every 3-6 months and NO RUST for me!

Bill, it only hurts to buy the best once, that's when you sign the cheque.

I guess yours will have the new riving knife, I have the Merlin splitter and an Excalibur overarm guard, which I like a lot.

Enjoy your new saw.

Thanks for supporting the Canadian economy.

Regards, Rod.

OH - forgot to mention that I'm in Georgia! Pretty darn humid here in the summers!

and you could always make your own riving knife and insert and save money getting a good saw that you don't spend a ton on. Plus, the pride of actually making your own customizations, like with any jig!
