This is a Hackberry bowl about 10 X 4. I had all sorts of trouble getting the wood read to finish. The wood wanted to crumble as I sanded. The more I'd sand the more it would crumble, especially on the inside endgrain. Finally, I applied a coat of finish mixture (tung oil, Sprits, and Clear Gloss Poly), let it dry overnight. Then I started with 80 grit paper and worked up to 600. This did the trick, it came out looking good. Well, the finish came out looking good, the wood is still ugly.

Wow, that wood is so ugly that the picture would not even post!!! :D

At least I don't see a picture. Maybe it is me that is too ugly!

That is not ugly wood. The first hackberry I turned was completely gray, with zero character.

Bill, When I look in the mirror I see ugly but when a piece is turned on the lathe all I see is beauty! That is very spalted and that may have contributed to the crumbling. Some of the spalted wood I have of many species is very light and airy and will crumble with to much pressure and no stablization. Great bowl and spin some more!

You oughta be ashamed for even thinking about posting that ugly thing on this forum.
Just kidding. :D
However, maybe you should get an eye exam. :)

Bill,
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, my eye sees beauty, well done.

Bill,
Great save on some nice wood. Hack spalts easily and rapidly compared to some other woods, and can be difficult to catch it before it has gone too far, gets crumbly, and eventually turns to compost.

I believe there is no ugly wood, there may be a few ugly women, but not wood. Nice bowl, and good problem solving.
