I worked up half the large oak burl today. I only had a handfull of scrape from the half I cored. I ended up with 8 bowls including the bottom I cored off to use. It is some of the prettiest oak I've ever seen. I hope it dries without much problem. The biggest is around 17" in dia.

Pretty grain in these bowls

This is the bottom I had left after coring. I turned the edge down and got a pretty bowl without the natural edge.

The bowls that came from one half of the burl. 8 total after I cored the small core shown.

Amazing wood Jack! Great job on all the coring! Looking forward to seeing these finished!

Bill - don't forget to count the large bowl still attached to the lathe!

Thanks guy's. Bill, You are right. I cored the smallest bowl that is shown in the picture after this picture, since it was still solid. This gave me my 8th bowl in the set.
Thanks,
Jack

I don't typically like oak too much but that sure is some pretty stuff you got. Good luck with the drying and I hope you get them all finish turned nice also.

Jack, Darn good work! Should produce some spectacular finished pieces. Have you ever cored one like that before? It looks like the onion type and sometimes they will crack at the layers so seal them and watch them to see how they react.

Thanks again everyone. Jeff, it is more pen burl than anything. I've really never seen a Oak burl like it. The way that the grain grew it is almost perfectly symmetrical around the bowl. I hope this prevents it from moving as much as oak usally does. I have turned a few oak burls before I got the coring set up that where the onion type. They moved a lot, but did not crack. I have this all baged or double bagged in a cool dry spot on my shop floor right now. I'm going to watch them very close over the next week and if I see any sign of cracking I will probably turn them to a thin finial thickness and let them dry and move, then sand it. Time will tell.
Thanks,
Jack

Wow that Oneway corer is really paying off here Jack.
Exceptional Oak burl you found and I hope each and everyone of your bowls will make it to a finished one, thanks for showing, take care.
