Good luck Colin. I was on the same quest a few months back but gave up. I was trying to find something like this photo, but I wonder if it's a custom thing.

Try a sailing or rigging shop, It's too small for a mast, but it sure looks like it might be a boom extrusion..

I just got a new small "specials" catalog from JDS that has a weighted plastic base with leds and even batteries included for $4.25. Sorry but I have no idea if they ship to the UK or not.

Make your own , use a supawood base and clad the sides with aluminium, even cheaper than "real" ally is the formICA (COUNTERTOP STUFF) mettalic.

Hi Colin,
yes there is an extrusion, that I have been putting LED ribbon in the bottom of. The extrusion takes thickness sizes 6mm - 10mm and comes in any length up to 5m long. I have just finished patenting it and we have had great success with it. As it is late at night here Down Under ( New Zealand ) i will post some pics tomorrow and answer any questions you may have.

Uhm, what exactly did you patent about it?

The patent basically covers the way in which glass, perpex etc is held using a clamp method. The u shape piece inside slides across and clamps the material being used. If you want to change the material , you just undo it , replace the material and clamp it up again. Simple but very strong.
