This is a recent one of mine, Curly silver maple (I thought it was silver anyway, could be sugar maple) with a shallow turquoise inlay on the rim. Turquoise is a pain to crush with a mortar & pestle. Pretty hard! Finish is Minwax Antique Oil. I'm new to photography. Sorry bout the lame pics. Its about 13" by 4" tall.

Very nice work Nathan. I love the understated foot. You are probably right about it being silver maple. Sugar maple doesn't display the dark grsin variations seen your piece.

Nice form and finish...I,ll bet with those outside curves it feels good in the hand.

Beautiful work, the curl is magnificent and the turquoise band really pops. What size crush did you use for the turquoise or is it a blended crush?

Thanks folks! I don't know how to answer about the size; I just kinda tapped away until it looked about right. I suppose the pieces were about 1/32" -1/16" on average, down to powder in size. I put down a bead of thick CA glue and put in big pieces, then filled it in with smaller pieces and med. glue. I bought the pieces from a jeweler's cutoff supply on Ebay.

Thanks for the link. If i'd known about this site, I could've saved hours of tap tap tapping away.....turquoise is pretty hard compared to other inlay stones.

Nathan, great bowl the figure is nice and I like the inlay. But have you done an inlay with mixing the material with epoxy and inlaying it? I was told about that way also and I'll try that on my table most likely. I'll put info on how it goes.

I haven't tried that yet. I think that would work well with voids in a bowl, or with very fine inlay material to mix with the epoxy and just drip into a crack. If the turquoise had been finer, I think that might work very well.

Nothing wrong with this one!!

For Turquoise: Colbaugh Processing (928)565-4650
They sell floor chips @ $15/lb. That's unstablized turquoise, so it's easier to crush.
They take checks or credit cards with a $50 minimum. They ship U.P.S.

Ask for Josh Colbaugh, he'll know what you want. "Floor sweepings"

You can crush it in a pipe with a cap, into which you insert the chunks of turquoise, then use another, smaller, pipe with cap, which you insert on top of the turquoise. Just beat the tar out of the turquoise with the inner pipe. ;)

Or you can make a crusher like this one: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=94298

Hope this helps someone. :)
