So our DW735 is sold and thought I would test the UPS around here. We will see how this goes, I took some photos of packing. I think its bullet proof but we will see. Took me about an hour to build and pack.....

They are images from my cell and the lens is all dull so they are fuzzy but,

We sawed and dried that cherry about three years ago and I have given almost all of it away over that time. Will have to find some more when I am ready to build something for myself out of cherry hehe.

I used two small cherry boards to pinch the stack of lumber out at the edges of the planer rather than on the rolls. It will only be in transit for a day or two but I didnt want to run the risk of flat spotting the rolls.

It should leave tomorrow or Tuesday so hopefully UPS isnt as rough around here as they are in Lemkinland.

I have included images before from my picasa web albums by just "insert image" and pasting the image URL. Thats what I did here, I just unchecked "parse url" in advanced but something makes me think thats not it

Wierd, I re-did all the images and now all but the first are broken on my screen. If I right click and "open in new tab" they open.

Mark, it is best to just upload them to SMC, that way no one will have a problem viewing them.

Did you charge a crating fee?

Mark Bolton
03-16-2009, 10:54 PM
Nah, no crating fee. This is all old crating from equipment, even the bolts, so other than the screws and my time its free. I am just happy to see the planer get some use rather than sitting in the shop collecting dust.

Not to detract in any way,but I used to ship finished guitars we made. I made a nice crate out of 3/4" pine, which the customers had to ship back. I swear, though,in spite of the FRAGILE's on the crate,I think the shippers threw the crate about even worse than cardboard, because they still kept breaking guitars. I'm wondering if the extra weight contributed to the problem. Maybe the shippers thought the crate was bullet proof, darned if I know.

George,
I agree, in our experience the more "fragile" you put on something the more you taunt them into being rough with it.

As to your crates that needed to be returned, I wish that would come back into the norm. I can tell you how it kills us to throw away all sorts of packing stuff(s). Just take the average kitchen order, there are dozens and dozens of cardboard corner protectors, plastic protectors, and so on. All of which are light, and usually come out of the box basically unused. I always want to throw them in a box and ship them back "attention packing department".

Such a waste,
Mark

I have a friend who works for UPS. I forget the number of packages they do in one night but is a crazy insane amount. You wonder how that is even possible to move that amount. Reading Fragile or the like on packages is not going to happen.

it's kinda funny people think their package is going to get special treatment because of the size etc...

"Hey Jack, This package may have something special in it so bring Joe with you and we will team lift it to a safe place on the truck" LOL!!!!!

What is a lemkin?

What is a lemkin?

Lemkin is the new English root word contained in the following examples

Lemkin, the surname of Dan, an SMC member who became engaged in a contest to see how many jointer/planer combos from various manufacturers can be shipped before one is delivered in suitable working order.

Lemkinite, similar to Luddite, a person who has been driven back to neander woodworking after reading the saga of Dan Lemkin

Lemkinize, the process by which working, packaged machinery can be converted to a mixture of bent, broken, and randomly arranged parts inside a sealed crate. In a process similar to Schroedingers cat, any attempt to observe the condition of the machinery from the exterior of the crate, alters the condition of said contents, or cats.

Lemkins Law, Any object, regardless of value or how carefully packaged, can be reduced to scrap by someone you pay to take due care of, and responsibility for.

Dan Limkin is a member who had a run of very bad luck with new machinery shipping damage.

I’m sure the OP’s title selection was in jest but I wouldn’t think that Dan would care to have his good name associated broken machinery screw-ups from now on.

Yeah, but we'll never know the answer because they got him to finally accept one that was "undamaged enough".:D

Sounds like we need a "Lemkin Law of Diminishing Returns"........Rod.
