Here's something I just finished. My dad showed me a lidded box he turned a couple weeks ago and I loved the basic shape, but I decided to take it a step further and carve it. It is walnut and the carving is supposed to be walnut branches. I hope you like it!

I rarely keep track of my time on this type of project. I started it about 3 weeks ago and I worked on it a little most days.

This is wonderful looking piece. You should post this over in the turners forum, will turn them all :D with envy.

So how do you keep the background so smooth and at a consistent depth on a curved object like this. On a flat piece I cam imagine a hand held router.

I used a drill bit with a stop block and drilled a lot of holes all over the background fields. That gave me a reasonably consistent depth for the relief.
