Hello all! It's been a long time since I started a thread, so for those of you whom I don't know, I'm Hutch. :D

I performed a turning demonstration at the local Woodcraft today. It's the first one I have done, and I really enjoyed it. I showed the functions and proper use of the skew, as well as how to turn a sphere. Here's the outcome. 3.5" Walnut Sphere (with sapwood), finished with Danish oil.

Hutch, Nice sphere! Need to attempt one of those some day! Like Richard Raffan says" It is nice to have a few of them rolling around the garden"

Now all you need is a mallet to go with it.
Very nice shape.

I would think that would be one of the more difficult item to turn, unless you had a jig. Very nice.

Thanks all! Yeah, I haven't been spending nearly as much time on the net as I used to. I have a number of larger bowls ready for completion, and hopefully will find some time over the next few months to get them done and post pics.

As far as the ball goes, after the first turning, which is done in a spindle orientation, I used a fingernail bowl gouge. Now if I had used a skew, I think I would be bragging loud and proud. :D (As well as being full of it)

Actually, I unintentionally found out that it doesn't bounce while trying to take the picture. Oops!

So here's a Mulberry ball turned with a skew. I definitely like using the bowl gouge better. But the finished product came out about the same. :)
