I love making tools and your posts are getting real interesting.

I like the idea of making dovetail or other small backsaws.
The real question for me is that folded or milled back.

I have studied some of your solutions. The folded steel from HD sounds like an excellent idea. A milled slot seems out of my range since I have no milling equipment. The Norse Woodsmith home-made metal brake is also pretty interesting.

Then I checked out a local metal working shop. They could take a piece of brass that I provide, shear and bend 4 pieces from it to 90° for $45. I'm not ready to move on this yet, but I wonder if that would be a good solution, especially if got a piece of 12" x 12" brass (.93" thick-$36 + shipping) from McMaster Carr, and have them shear and bend 6 pieces from it. That would be good for either dovetail or carcass saw backs.

I could either keep on making saws or make one or two and provide the rest of the folded brass pieces to other creekers for my costs plus shipping.

Am I thinking right or is my head bent somewhere:rolleyes:?

You may have to anneal the brass to keep it from cracking as it is bent. We used 260 alloy half hard, and had to anneal it.

I wrote this out to get some help, so I appreciate your input.

I am also thinking about all that I don't know, and all that I don't know about not knowing.

I probably will be better off spending time with rehabs and a kit to build up my awareness of my ignorance before I prove it to myself:rolleyes:.

So where does one go to read about how to make all of these tools?

Leif put together a nice article/blog about making a backsaw. Its one of the few things you will find that is in depth with its information.

Hi Brian,

Making the back can be a bit tricky, here is Tim Hoff's technique, which
doesn't require as much metalworking, it may suit what you want.
