On my last trip to the lumber yard i picked up a bunch of miscellaneous bowl blanks to play with.... one of them was this red-ish brown chunk of wood that turned out to have an amazing grain pattern.

I know the receipt listed its name but unfortunately SOP is to destroy any evidence of trips to the lumber yard :p.

I think i remember it as some type of oak... but its unlike any oak I've seen before. The picture just doesn't do it justice.

Anybody have any idea?

Could be as simple as red oak, but I doubt it. Sure pretty. Nice job.

it nice, not sure how big it is

no sapwood, all heartwood, so its was a very large tree, real straight grain,

not sure what it is, i do not believe it is oak

You could always take your bowl back to the lumber yard and ask for a refill. Surely they would recognize the wood by its grain.

Heck, they might even look up your receipt (specially if it was electronic) and verify it that way.

The bowl is ~9inches...

I called the lumber yard and they said it's 'Shee Oak' (that is the spelling they used).

The all-mighty-google led me to 'Sheoak' (http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/sheoak.htm)(Allocasuarina fraseriana) from Australia.

I may have to take another trip to the lumber yard and see if they have any more... I paid $12 for a 10x3 block.

Is anybody familiar with Sheoak?

Sure looks like some I turned. Pretty bowl and I like the form. What kind of finish did you use?

The finish is just EEE-Ultrashine and Shellawax. My Father-in-law wanted something for his desk that he could toss coin's and other odd'n'ends into. Kind of makes me sad knowing that the great lace grain pattern will be covered up by pocket lint.

Brian - I know a couple of guys in England that turn Sheoak. Don't know if they imported it or if it grew locally, but sure is some pretty stuff!

I recently turned a few chunks of sheoak, from trees here in the Los Angeles area I believe. It typically has nice red colors in the deeper heartwood, and that amazing grain pattern you've seen. A few more months and I'll have pics of the ones I turned (roughed and drying now).
