I bought a cheap HF lathe for $150 to see if I enjoy turning..
I've been sucked into the vortex:eek:

Started with a chunk of blue oak that was destined for the wood stove...

It has a real nice contrasting grain color that will set it off.

I cut the corners off..

Mounted it in the lathe...

Made it round..

hollered it out inside..

Very nice, congrats on your first bowl. Indeed the vortex is strong. It only gets worse as time goes by. You'll know for sure you've hit wrong bottom when a new mustard is in the mail.

o oops, I forgot who you are. I guess you rock bottom is building your own bowl lathe. That might actually be lower.

That's some great start to finish pictures. It looks like your helper may have fell in to the vortex with you. Nothing better than time spent making memories with your children:), they seem to go from age 2 to 22 overnite.....Tony

Great first bowl! You have honored your sawmillcreek turners pledge "pull someone in with you". Don't know if it will get you anything but you are now a vortex gonner!...Bill..

Great looking first bowl - and a natural edge one at that! Make sure you sign and date it as there is only one 'first' bowl. You will be surprised at how your turning changes over a year's time! Have fun with it! Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Yeah Alex, I got sucked to the bottom of the vortex pretty quick like..

Andrew, its cheap Harbor Freight crap but I was pushing its limits. It was but a stepping stone... For a hunnerd an fiddy bucks and a few el-cheapo gouges and scrapers it got me started for cheap.

Thanks to you all for the kind words, great bunch of folks here at the creek.

They do grow up fast dont they Tony, She is the youngest of five. oldest ia in the Army and allready served two tours of duty in Iraq.

Better make a platform for the little ones so they can get up to height. They are going to want to do this again and again and should be comfortable and safe. Then when they won't let you have some lathe time, you'll just have to get yourself another one -------

I'll be making more bowls soon.

The HF lathe would work for small wood but I have bigger things in mind...I'll set the lil one up for the kids and show em how to sharpen tools;)

Stay tuned...

Thanks all for the kudos and encouragement.
