Hello fellow woodworkers,
I am new to the neanderthal side of woodworking, and I am starting to aquire some pretty nice LN planes (3 of them now and a DT saw). That being said I would like to protect and store these fine tools in a nice cabinet or box and was wondering if anyone knew of some good plans for building one of these. Thanks in advance for any info!

I asked a similar question not too long ago, and there are numerous threads on the subject with lots of cabinets. Just do a search, it won't be hard to find some for inspiration.

Welcome John,
Here is a link to a thread showing some pics I posted about my cabinet. No plans, but it was inspired by many cabinets I have seen in person, magazines, and online.

Good luck with yours,

Chris Schwarz, editor of Popular Woodworking magazine, has a couple of tool cabinets featured in articles.

December 2004 Popular Woodworking had plans and construction details for this tool cabinet (http://blog.woodworking-magazine.com/blog/SketchUp+Model+Available+For+My+Tool+Cabinet.aspx) .

Here (http://www.popularwoodworking.com/article/Hand_Plane_Cabinet/), he details building a slammer cabinet for handplanes.

Gary,

That is a beautiful tool cabinet, and very well compartmentalized for your tools. I made some general purpose cabinets from some plans from Family Handyman, but they are no where near nice enough for hand tools. Thanks for your insight.

Hey Guys,

Thank you all for the insightful info, and the excellent examples you all have posted. This has given me a good start and some great Ideas. I just built some general purpose tool cabinets out pegboard and ply which turned out nicely, but are nowhere near the calibur of some of the examples you all have posted.

Do a search for plane till or saw till. You'll find a couple come up from Dave Anderson. His plane till and saw till are really nice and inspiring.

Several months ago I completed the major construction on a wall mounted tool cabinet. It measures approx 52" wide x 42" tall, x 13" deep. It's made from 3/4" oak ply and trimmed in cherry wood. The drawer fronts are Ambrosia maple (and yes, I know the dovetails are backwards! It's a design feature.....or so I keep telling myself)
Here's one with me in the frame just to give you an idea how big it is.

The cabinet can comfortably hold over 42 planes with room for more if I push it.:D

I'm just now getting to the part where I'm hanging stuff on the doors. The left hand door is home for my saws and marking tools. The right will be for my chisels, carving tools, spoke shaves, straightedges and other assorted small layout tools. The interior door that covers the plane till is home for my card scrapers, braces, and egg beater drills.

Very nice, I'm in the middle of a re-do in my shop and was looking at making my upper tool cabinet similar to that.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Dominic - Beautiful cabinet, have you considered taking off the inner door to display your jointer planes? If it wasn't for the future storage area, I'd even go as far as to suggest replacing the front door panels with glass.

Nice job.

Fred,
Thanks for the compliments. The inner door is actually being used NOW for storage (I don't have any recent photos) for my braces, eggbeater drill, and card scrapers. I toyed with the idea of eliminating it completely but decided against it after I found I needed the space. And as far as replacing it with glass,.....I think that would just be a disaster waiting to happen! :D And this is more of a "working" cabinet than a display.
