We have recently moved from Chicago to Redondo Beach, CA. I am still yet to finish setting up my shop and hopefully that will happen over the next few weeks.

I would like to know what are some of the good lumber sources (rough sawn cherry, walnut, etc.) in this area.

Thanks in advance for any tips...

I'm up in Ventura, so don't know much about the Redondo area. But you might start with Anderson Plywood... I've heard they are a good supplier although not a hardwood specialist. They can probably refer you to somebody that is.

I 've gotten my lumber from these guys:

Red Eagle Lumber
7653 Telegraph Road
Montebello, CA 90640
323 726 9956

They've been really helpful and have a good stock.

I will 2nd the Bohnhoff recommendation. I lived in SoCal for 21 years, the last 9 in the valley, Burbank. And this was my main source for all types of hardwoods. It is the ONLY thing I miss about CA.

How about Arroyo Hardwoods in Pasadena, its an hour drive from you but I think they have higher end wood. I know there the pacifics only seller of Kauri wood.

I use Bonhoff Lumber too. The only bad thing is that there open mon-fri only.

It is a ways south of you, but they have a good supply and are open on Saturday. They are also a big supporter of the Orange County Woodworkers Association.

Austin Hardwoods & Hardware

610 N Santiago St, Santa Ana, CA 92701

Bonhoff doesn't have a web site. You should call them in advance and tell them what you are looking for so that they can haul out the pallets of wood for you to pick over.

Austin is particularly nice because it's indoors and the lumber is surfaced -- but that also means the prices are slightly higher than for rough lumber. You might also try Reel Lumber, which is somewhere near Anahiem.

Another one is Petermans. I know they have a location out in Fontana (central San Bernadino Valley, somewhere near the I-10/1-15 Interchange). Don't know much about them down there, but the Peterman folks here in Vegas seem to be good people.

Arroyo is OK. Nice guys but sometimes the selection is sort of thin, and the prices are usually on the higher end of the scale. Rockler is just down the street, with more exotics, and they usually have prices comparable to Arroyo. High retail.

Bonhoff is the best for price that I've seen if you can get there during their business hours, or at least they were when I was there last.

Folks, thanks so much for the suggestions about local lumber sources. I look forward to visiting one of these soon...

You sure can't beat the weather here:-))

I like Austin Hardwoods. It's worth the drive if you can check this place out.

FYI - They are an authorized Festool reseller and have demo units that people can try.

I remember like 5 years ago they had this "clearance" rack with a bunch of odd pieces of exotic woods selling for real cheap. I bought some nice looking curly maple boards for $4 or less per board foot. Last time I was there I couldn't find misc clearance boards. :(

Their prices may not be cheap on misc hardware and tools, but I do like their price and selection of hardwood and MDF trim molding.

I've recently bought quite a bit of wood from Austins. Their selection, however, changes quite a bit over time. Some of their selection can be very limited. They even gave me a discount when I showed them my San Diego Fine Woodworkers membership card.

They now charge the same price for their "shorts" as they do for "full length" boards.

Wow - Chicago to Redonda Beach - minor climate change :D

I moved from KC to Heromsa - excellent times and beautiful weather (yea, I'm back in KC, enjoying the 22 degree warmth today)
