Can one create an advanced search that lists "New Posts" for selected folders? For example, I don't turn or engrave, so I'd like a way to regularly view new posts for all the other forums.

There is a way to do this with a bookmark in your browser, but its pretty involved.

The first step is to go to the forum index showing all the forums. Hover over the title of the forums you want to include. In the lower left of your browser you should see the URL of that forum ... the General Woodworking forum will have "http://www.sawmillcreek.org/forumdisplay.php?f=16" That number at the end is what you need for each forum you want the bookmark to use.

The bookmark the index page in your browser. In Firefox, which I use, I can then click "Bookmarks", "Recently Bookmarked" and highlight the bookmark I just made. Right click on it and select Properties. You can edit the "Location" or URL of the bookmark, which right now just says "http://www.sawmillcreek.org/index.php"

Let's assume you want to check the Freedom Pens forum (f=17), Store (f=34), Boat Builders (f=42), Deals and Discounts (f=44), Free Stuff (f=16) and General Woodworking forums (f=3). You will want to edit that "Location" or URL of the bookmark so it looks like this:

http://www.sawmillcreek.org/search.php?do=process&do=getnew&searchdate=lastvisit&beforeafter=after&forumchoice[]=17&forumchoice[]=34&forumchoice[]=42&forumchoice[]=44&forumchoice[]=16&forumchoice[]=3
Here's how it works: the "search.php" function is told it is going to do an advanced search process, and has to getnew posts. It is told to use a searchdate of your lastvisit and after that date, and the forumchoice is the forum ID number we wrote down earlier. Each command is joined in the URL by the ampersand "&" character.

Danny, I use a technique that is very similar to Frank's, but the URL isn't quite as involved. I have a shortcut on my desktop (Windows XP) whose target (URL) is:

http://www.sawmillcreek.org/search.php?do=getnew&include=f1, f2, f3, ..., fN

where "f1, f2, f3, ..., fN" is the list of forum numbers that Frank mentioned.

Danny, here's the technique I came up with and posted about a year ago here: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showpost.php?p=753266&postcount=16

Any new forums added since then won't be in that list, but it'll get you most of the way quickly.

Be well,
