View Full Version : Desk Grommets

I built a new built in desk, and installed some 2 1/2" desk grommets for the cables. They are a little loose in the holes. These are the two part grommets, and I'm only talking about gluing the outer part to the desk. The inner part will still remove to insert the cables.

Do you glue these in? Maybe a little liquid nails or epoxy?

Thanks

Bob

Before doing that I would just shim it with some paper so it would not move around and you can remove them if you need to... Just a thought :)

If the grommets are plastic, epoxy won't stick to them. Epoxy might use the grooves around the grommet to make a mechanical connection, but it won't bond. Liquid Nails does make a fair bond to the plastic -- I know, I've used it for exactly this purpose. Put the bead of adhesive on the inner face of the hole, not on the grommet. If you put it on the grommet and then shove it into the hole, you may get squeeze-out back on to what is probably now a finished surface of the desk. Polyurethane glue might bond well enough to the plastic too, but it'll give you more squeeze-out headaches.

Use clear silicon caulk.

I've glued in dozens of them.

Hi Bob, I don't think you want to glue the grommets in place. You will need to be able to remove the grommet in order to pass the plugs on power cords through the table top. If the fit is around 1/8" or less, don't bother with it. After all, the grommet is only there to hide the hole, not provide any mechanical stability. :)

I just wrap tape around the outside of the groment till it fits snug.:)
