Local Sawmills Shut-Down

I found out this weekend that two of my local sawmills have shut down. One has shutdown their mill completely, and the other has shutdown the saw but not their planer (they now buy rough cut lumber for making custom molding and flooring). The mills were running on diesel and when the fuel price went through the roof, they couldn't afford to run the mill.

I had found a website that was listing lumberyards by zipcode, but was not listing sawmills (two of the three mills I frequent were not listed). Does anyone know of a why to find out where and who is (still) operating a sawmill?

Woodweb has a directory listing of members mills. See if there are any listed in your area. Seems alot of mills all over are going down due to low prices and lack of demand.

Try www.woodfinder.com for a list of local mills. I'm afraid we are going to see more closures before this thing begins to turn around.

on Craigslist I go into the materials section and search for "wood". There is a lot of firewood and other stuff, but if you sift through the results there are a fair number of guys listing their rough sawn materials. One of the guys I see regularly specializes in reclaimed and urban woods

I dunno, one dealer here wanted $8.50/bf for FAS 5/4 walnut that was 30% sapwood...and that was after searching the stack for 30 minutes. I passed on that one.

I've tried WoodWeb and Woodfinder. Unfortunately they specialize too much in the retail aspect or in the custom sawing and don't have listings for a lot of the stationary mills in the area.

check out the Forestry Forum (forestryforum.com). They have many listings of millers across the US.
