Behind Manta Ray

No matter for wizardry.
I've not bent one square...abandoned following some unsuccessfull trials...
Basic is the turn of two winged crowns (four squares upstairs, four square downstairs)
but not to have the micing squares threating innocents knuckles, I glue sacrificial wood,
and this way I've always a round to deal with.
Follow a brief tutorial with several pics I've shoot during the work.

Bowl is turned from a parallelepiped 125/125 X 55 mm cm thick. I glue sacrificial wood
to have a cylinder with the four corner in.
I round on the bandsaw.

Glue a spigot to tighten in my Nova chuck (The cylinder is on a screwchuck)

Turn the bottom of the bowl.
Turn the space between the two series of wings (one upwards other downwards).
Normaly, you do that with the skew chisel. I've problems with this tool so I've worked
with a parting tool flat on the tool rest. That do the job but "ce n'est pas orthodoxe"
Je tourne le fond du bol et je tourne l'espace entre les deux séries d'ailes (une en haut,
une en bas). Normalemont je devrais travailler avec la plane. Comme je ne maitrise
pas bien cet outil, j'ai utilisé un grain d'orge à plat sur le porte outil, ça marche mais "it's
not the right way" (09 10)

The bowl is hollowed. Cut the spigot, and saw the sacrificial wood (with care)

There is the eight winged bowl. Only task to perform out of the lathe is to cut three wings one side and one the other. This is time consuming job, I made it carefully with gouge and knife, chip after chip...
And you get the "Manta Ray" so called by Terry Scott
Voilà le bol à huit ailes. Le seul travail qui reste à faire en dehors du tour, c'est couper
trois ailes en bas et une en haut. C'est un long travail qui prend beaucoup de temps.
J'ai fait ça avec une gouge et un couteau, copeau après copeau...
