View Full Version : Mounting brush on lower bandsaw wheel?

I've had my Grizzly G0555 for nearly five years now and it is running perfectly. My problem is I keep having to fight with sawdust (and ocassional pitch from softwoods) building up on the lower wheel. I don't know if the recent models have a lower wheel brush now.

My question is, can someone offer advice to me on mounting a brush to a lower bandsaw wheel? Are there commercial sources for bandsaw wheel brushes somewhere?

Advice doesn't have to be specifically for my Griz model. I have toyed with the idea of heat bending a stiff-bristle toothbrush handle and mounting it to the back of the lower enclosure. Any photos for guidance would also be appreciated. Thanks!
Kev

IIRC David Marks used a toothbrush mounted to a wood block.

Rockler sells one.

I got one for my old Grizzly G1019 14" BS directly from Grizzly. I think it was about $2.

Here's a clip from the Griz manual showing mounting location.

I think Carter is the maker of the one that Rockler sells. But it looks fairly useless with the bristles of the brush laying on the wheel.

I saw a video recently by David Marks on band saw tune-up where he shows what looks like a brass bristle brush that he mounted on a band saw of his.

From the amount of saw dust and how hard it is to remove from my band saw. I like the idea of a brush like that or at least hard plastic bristle where the tips of the bristles are perpendicular to the wheel

Go here and check out the Band Saw Tune-up video by Daivd Marks under the "Woodworking Tools and Materials":

I have that Carter brush on my bandsaw. It works great, but I mounted it so that the bristles were pointed against the direction of rotation -- opposite of that picture.

Splendid innovation!

I will replace commercially available brush with one like yours.

Although it's a bit crowded on that side with the lower guides and all, mounting the brush on the right side of the wheel, to hit the dust as it falls through the table and before it gets smooshed under the band, might be most effective for keeping the tire clean.

Richard M., that is what I was looking for to solve my problem!:)
Thank you!

That also is some kind of heavy-weight enclosure on your bandsaw as well. Cast iron or cast steel enclosure?

Now for the tough question... Do you use Crest, Close-up or some other toothpaste with that bandsaw?:D

It's an old cast iron Walker-turner band saw.
