What would one expect to pay for a block of pine 4" x 4" x 9"? The block has straight grain and very few knots. I am new to carving and don't know much about it. Thanks.

Around here sugar pine goes for about $4/bf, if I remember from the last time I bought some. I remember it wasn't that expensive. You have about one board foot so I'd pay about $5 for it. Unless there's something really unusual about it, or you don't have any other source.

Interesting choice of wood...What did you have in mind to carve?

pine is the only wood i have used for the last 5 years. i buy it in 16 foot lengths but 5 dollars sounds about right to me.

I started on a variety of woods but when I went to basswood to get my technique down I was happier. Just a thought. Other woods look nicer when you finish the piece but for me I found it easier to learn control and proportions on a softer wood.
