I thought I had read about this once but I can't find any record of it now.

Has anyone put together a twin screw face vise using two quick release vises (like these (http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=2&p=54873&cat=1,41659,41661&ap=1))?

I currently have a twin screw face vise using these (http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=2&p=41664&cat=1,41659).

I like my current vise a lot, it just seems to be somewhat of a dance when I try to hold the piece and tighten 1 screw, then the other, then back to the first one and so forth. And then the same when I release it.

It just seems that everything would be right in the world if the twin screw moved in and out like a quick release.

Wouldn't that kind of setup negate the ability to clamp in between the screws? That extra space is needed more often then you may think. I have gotten used to the cranking needed to open and close mine. QR would be great but not if I had to sacrifice that room in BT the screws.

I actually think I have enough room in my vise that I can put 2 of those QR in there and maintain the distance between screws. My vise is just under 4 ft long, with about 1 ft on either side of the screws and 2 feet between screws.

But you mean with or without the metal guides on each side of the screw?

That's 1 ft of space outside the single ACME screw that I currently have. So, although I haven't measured it. I imagine that if I place the QR vises' interior metal guide where the acme thread is currently, than the interior clamping space will be unchanged.

Anyways, this is more conjecture than planning right now. I had thought someone had already attempted this and I was curious as to their experience. But maybe I was mistaken about that.

I have never seen it done but if you do decide to try it, please share.
