Double doors for Frank Pellow's workshop

In the thread showing the progress of Jim Ketron's shop, Larry Merlau asked for details about the double doors that I have built for my shop. I promised him to start a new thread on the subject.

This is that thread. It is a spin-off from the thread entitled "Frank's Workshop Construction Project" (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=7769).


Material: Rough sawn 3/4 inch plywood, rough-sawn 1 inch pine boards, and 1" rigid foam insulation, and 5 milimetre G1S plywood for the interior side.

Weight: About 80 pounds each

Dimensions: Height: 78 inches
Overall width: 66 inches
Thickness: 3 inches
Overlap: 1.5 inches

Pictures: In the belief that a picture is worth a thousand words, I will show how I build these things using pictures. If anyone wants an explanation of something that is not obvious from the pictures, please ask.

Picture (1) shows the outside of the two doors. This side has the same stain as my board and batten siding will have. (I have not yet installed the doors on the shed, so they are resting against my garage wall.)
Picture (2) shows the inside of one of the doors. Notice the lip. This side has been primed but not yet painted. It will be painted white like the rest of the interior of my shop.

Picture (3) shows the back of a door under construction and you can see the overlap that is being built in the eliminate wind between the doors.

I also had to built doors for the basement of my cabin and I also insulated as you did! The mice loved it and inhabited that area when I wasn't @ the cabin.
Anyway, it'll help protect from those wintry chills! Good job!! Jerry

What R-value do you think you have with them?

The R value of the doors is probably only about 7. I do think that I will be able to instal them in a way that eliminates most drafts.

Bart Leetch asked me a question, and I decided that both the question and my answer should be added to this thread.

Bart's question: I hope your hinges are going to be on the inside of the doors or the screws are placed in such a way that thieves can't get to them.

Frank's answer: The screws are on the outside. But, each hinge will also have one bolt with a smoth (non graspable) end on the outside of the door and a similar bolt attaching the other end of each hinge to the building.
