Does anyone know what kind of wood this veneer is from?

I should have said there are three different veneers (doh!) I was thinking the wide one on the left was walnut, the middle some kind of ebony, but no idea what the thinner (right) one is.

That looks to me like tigerwood. When the grain stripes gets wider some people call it zebrawood, but they are both the same species.

Is it as hard or harder than oak? That is a big clue.

Leave a piece outside to weather, tigerwood will patina to a very nice grey.

Hope this helps,

Woody

Thats three different veneers, correct? I think the last one looks like some makore I have laying around, the middle one might be ebony, or something that has been ebonized, and the the first does kind of look like walnut. Just guesses, and I am by no means an expert.

James,

You might include the pictures in an e-mail query to Certainly Wood or another one of the veneer specialists.

The first one could be teak, depending on the lighting in the picture. I have some teak veneer that looks almost exactly like that. The 2nd one looks like some veneer that has been dyed black. Whatever it is, it has some grain to it that seems to really show up in these pictures. The last one looks like something that is called ribbon striped sapele.
Just my guesses.

Walnut, shedua or teak IMHO. I'm leaning to shedua.
